1. The 3 Types of YouTube Identifiers

YouTube has evolved its naming structure over the years, resulting in three distinct ways a channel can be referenced:

A. The Canonical Channel ID (UC...)

- Format: 24 characters starting with UC (e.g. UCX6OQ3DkcsbYNE6H8uQQuVA) - Permanence: 100% permanent and immutable. It can never be altered, renamed, or transferred. - Use Case: YouTube Data API v3, webhooks, RSS feeds, Discord notifications, and developer integrations.

B. The YouTube Handle (@username)

- Format: @handle (e.g. @MrBeast) - Permanence: Can be changed up to twice every 14 days in YouTube Studio. - Use Case: Social mentions, comments, search discovery, and channel branding.

C. Legacy Custom URLs (/c/name or /user/name)

- Format: youtube.com/c/CreatorName - Status: Deprecated in favor of standardized handles, but existing custom URLs continue to redirect automatically.

2. Why Developers and Tools Require the UC ID

While handles are great for human readability, software applications rely strictly on the UC Channel ID because:

1. Handles can change at any time without warning, breaking hardcoded bot triggers. 2. The official YouTube Data API endpoints exclusively accept the 24-character UC string as the primary channel resource identifier. 3. YouTube RSS feeds require the channel ID parameter to construct valid XML syndication endpoints.
